Diagnostic Services

1. Initial Patient Assessments:
When you are first seen at The London Sleep Centre, we will provide you with a thorough medical assessment by one of our Sleep Physicians. This will provide you and us the opportunity to objectively measure your symptoms and plan your unique treatment programme. Click on the following to perform an Online Sleep Assessment.

Once you have been assessed by our Sleep Physician, you may require further diagnostic tests or investigations. These may be done at home (domiciliary sleep studies) or in some instances you may require specialist overnight sleep tests in hospital. Our Sleep Studies Unit at The Princess Grace Hospital provides state-of-the-art facilities for the diagnosis of complex sleep disorders.

Home Based Sleep Studies

  • Actigraphy: In the assessment of patients with The Actiwatchsleep disorders, it is essential to obtain objective, accurately measured data on the patient's daily life. The recent advent of The Actiwatch and Actigraphy software has made this possible - it is now possible to measure a person's activity, environmental temperature, light levels, mood state all by means of a device that looks and fits like a wrist watch.  

    Home Oximetry DeviceWe use Actigraphy in the assessment of patients with Insomnia, Restless Legs Syndrome, Childhood Sleep Disorders, Circadian Rhythm Disorders, ADHD, Mood and Anxiety disorders. The London Sleep Centre offers Actigraphy services to patients and to clinicians.

  • Home Oximetry: This is an established screening tool for the diagnosis of sleep related breathing disorders such OSA. By means of a simple device, similar to a wristwatch, patients can be effectively screened for the presence of breathing related sleep disorders.

  • Ambulatory Sleep Studies: Respiratory related sleep dEmbletta© Portable Diagnostic System (PDS)isorders such as OSA can be now be diagnosed in the comfort of your own home through the use of  a detailed home based sleep study. This system uses a pocketsize digital recording device attached to a belt system that the patient wears to bed. This system is fast becoming the Gold Standard for the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).


3. Hospital Based Sleep Studies

  • Overnight Polysomnography (PSG): The gold standard diagnostic procedure in Sleep Medicine is the full overnight Polysomnography (PSG). We provideOvernight Polysomnography this service through our state-of-the-art Sleep Studies Unit at The Princess Grace Hospital. Our expert technicians and nurses observe and analyse these studies that provide information on Brain Activity, Respiratory Function, Muscle Function and a variety of other variables that are essential for the diagnosis of the more complex sleep disorders. PSG is particularly useful for the diagnosis of OSA and Sleep Disordered Breathing, Narcolepsy, Parasomnias, Restless Legs Syndrome and Neurological Disorders such as Epilepsy.

  • PSG and Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT): This is the established and sensitive test for the diagnosis of Narcolepsy

  • Paediatric Sleep Studies: The London Sleep Centre provides sleep studies for children at The Portland Hospital for Women and Children when referred to us by a specialist paediatrician.
